In September 2007 Forum started work on a very exciting and ambitious project to help make the greater Bristol area (including Bristol City, Bath and NE Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) the most sustainable city region in the UK. Given that every year more and more people worldwide are living in cities, with ever increasing environmental pressures on these urban areas, it is crucially important to be able to show people what sustainable living in cities will really look like.
We are working in partnership with a range of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to help make Bristol a real life example of what a sustainable city region could be like.
The programme of work involves three main stages:
- Mapping and agreeing what a sustainable city could be;
- Delivering world-class exemplar projects in key areas such as sustainable mobility, the built environment, local food, waste, education and climate change; and
- Sharing the learning and influencing practice both nationally and internationally
We believe that the Bristol city region will be an excellent showcase for this approach. It has firm green foundations on which to build. It has lots of NGOs, creative businesses and dynamic individuals. Although the area faces significant challenges from projected growth in housing, transport and the economy, there is an appetite and ambition from key players to address these challenges and deliver a truly sustainable city region.
