This report examines area-based initiatives in the South West that
point towards ways of reaping the full rewards of more sustainable land
use and resource management.
Four fifths of land in the South West is managed through agriculture. Over the centuries, agriculture has created diverse landscapes and wildlife habitats that support a national tourist industry now worth more than £14 billion a year. Farming doesn’t just produce food and fibre: it can also give us healthier soils, cleaner rivers and help to reduce flooding. Good land management can help us adapt to climate change impacts and develop cleaner sources of renewable energy. At present, very few farmers get paid for producing these essential goods and services.
