Developing countries are a huge growth market for IT and communications. The rapid expansion in the uptake of these technologies bring social benefits in improved connectivity and access to global services. However, without proper systems in place to deal with the end of life materials, there is also a threat that the disposal of these goods will damage people and their environment.
This report was written with the support of Vodafone. It looks at opportunities to improve the management of the life cycle of mobile phones in developing countries at the end of their lives. It also identifies a set of potential solutions that could be developed further, and outlines which stakeholders might be best placed to develop and manage those solutions.
