Trip and treat

Arrive by ferry at the National Trust’s Greenway garden, and you’ll get the thrill of a boat ride along the River Dart, no headaches about parking on the narrow Devon lanes, and 75p off the entry price. There are 50 NT properties now offering up to 20% discount on entry prices - or in some cases, a £1 tearoom voucher - to those who leave the car at home and come by foot, bike, bus, ferry or train. It might not sound like much of a reward for doing your bit for the environment, but NT’s Mike Collins says “the journey can be part of the day out. This summer we’ll be encouraging people to visit the Tate Britain’s Constable exhibition on foot from Manningtree station, so they can experience the same sights and smells that the artist did.”
